Overview
- In gaming, a Dialogue system is an interactive gameplay mechanic whereby a conversation between the player character and a non-player character occurs, typically with choices for the player of what to say; the process continues through subsequent choices until the conversation ends. These choices can shape the conversation, influence the morality of the player character, drive the story line, or even trigger action responses by the conversing NPC or other NPCs. Dialogue conversation trees can be complex with multiple paths and outcomes.
- In DC Universe™ Online, while still being interactive, the Dialogue system is a bit more... linear. Player characters typically have one choice for a response. This does, however, allow for the exchange to be more conversational where the NPC is replying to the player character's scripted lines instead of the exchange being one-sided. NPCs that can be spoken to via the Dialogue system are indicated by a golden circle around their overhead speech bubble in contrast to the typical pale blue.
- The Dialogue system was first utilized in DC Universe Online as part of the Fearful Day Chapter. Prior to this, the player could only infer what their character might have said from NPC reactions.
