History

  • The Mother Box technology was created by the New God inventor Himon using a metal known Element X and drawing power from the The Source. A Mother Box is considered a living being and is referred as "she/her", and is extremely loyal to her owner, with whom she shares a special affinity that allows communication via telepathy.
  • Only a being born on New Genesis or Apokolips can be capable of manufacturing a Mother Box. Still, it requires training and skill to succeed in creating one. Mister Miracle is known to be one of those skilled individuals, lending a prototype of one of his own designs to help the Exobyte-powered heroes fight the forces of Apokolips.
  • In DCUO, Mother Boxes have been seen opening Boom Tubes and healing their owners, as well as fighting enemies. According to Big Barda, they're also capable of manipulating energy and rearranging matter.

Trivia

  • The Mother Boxes were created by Jack Kirby, first appearing in Forever People #1 (1971).; Their first design (during the Earth-One in the Pre-Crisis era) was of a red rectangular cuboid; it was later changed to look like retro-futuristic mobile device with exposed circuitry in the shape of a walkman, and later of a PDA and a smartphone - the latter is the version of the Mother Box referenced in the game in the Halls of Power storyline, recognizable for their characteristic "ping" sound when interacted with (see gallery).; The current cubic design was introduced in the The New 52 era (2011-2016), but the idea of engravings in the boxes first appeared in the DC Extended Universe movies (2013-2025) - those have been introduced in the game in the Wonderverse episode.
  • Although the concept for the Mother Box has been introduced in Episode 11, Mother Boxes only got a physical representation in the game in Episode 38 with the introduction of the Mother Box combat pet.
  • Apokolips: New Genesis Undercity is the first time an NPC's Mother Box has a physical form in the game.
