Overview
- Gear, sometimes also referred to as Armor, is equipment that increases the player character's combat abilities by raising his or her stats-
- Though it includes everything which can be equipped except for consumables, it is sometimes referring to costume style sets only.
- Gear items visible on a player character always have a style, which can be collected by equipping them.

- Unattuned Gear was the first step towards giving the player more choice over the loot.
- In contrast to Attuned Gear it has a fixed item level and fixed stats, but will attune to the current player character's role, thus providing a choice whether it should be used for the damage or for the support role.
Elite Gear
- Elite Gear was introduced alongside elite content such as elite raids and elite alerts.
- Elite Gear originally dropped exclusively as loot from elite content up to the Amazon Fury Part III episode when they were then made available via the episode vendors due to an overall change in the game. The first style sets also available as elite were Ancient Amazon Noble for heroes and Ancient Divine Sorceress for villains. For each episode there is one costume set with an elite version.
- For the elite gear to become available at the vendors, player characters need to collect renown tokens from the episode's elite content.
- Elite gear can be easily spotted since the pieces are tagged with (Elite) in their names in the Tooltip, so the regular version of Conqueror's Noble Tiara becomes Conqueror's Noble Tiara (Elite).
- Elite gear has significantly better stats than the regular gear and if equipped enables Affinity Generator Mods.

R&D Gear
- Main article: R&D Gear
- R&D Gear is any gear which can be produced through the process of Research and Development. It became mostly obsolete by the introduction of augments, but resurfaced with the arrival of chapters, where R&D plans for elite weapons, utility belts and rings are available from Elite content.

- Attuned Gear is gear which attunes to the player character's Combat Rating within its item level range. It mostly is distributed through gear boxes.
- A gear piece from a box with a minimum item level of 10 and a maximum of 172 will have different stats if used by a player character with CR 53 as if by one with CR 180. The gear's item level would be about 1-3 levels higher than the weighted average of all your highest gear, depending on the attuned gear's rarity. For example, the CR 210 Advance gives you gear in every slot at level 183. At this stage, green attuned gear would give you level 184, blue would give you level 185, and purple 186.
- Attuned gear that is not picked yet does not contribute to your Combat Rating. To progress in CR most efficiently, you should always open attuned gear in a slot where the piece of gear you currently have is at the lowest level compared to your other gear (e.g. if you have attuned gear of every type and your current chest item is level 98 while all your other equipment is level 100, you should open the chest one first).
- Opening an attuned gear box will always offer a choice of the resulting piece in damage and support role, no matter which role the player character is currently in.
- Since the release of the House of Legends episode, all On Duty instances within the same tier (except from the latest 3 episodes, excluding House of Legends) now have the same CR requirements for Normal difficulty mode. However, the attuned gear they may drop still varies in min-max levels within a tier. Therefore, in general, doing instances listed at the end of a tier allows players to obtain attuned gear with a very high minimum level compared to their current gear, which lets them catch up in CR quickly. For example, Birds of Prey (Episode) requires 210+ CR (weighted item level average of 183), but its content drops attuned gear with a minimum level of 245.

- Since the House of Legends episode, most gear styles, formerly bound to specific content and tier, randomly drop with a generic item level. It essentially works like attuned gear in which the gear level is scaled, always slightly stronger than the weighted average of current gear. For example, at 268 CR (233 weighted average item level), generic gear may be obtained at level 237 (green), 239 (blue), and 241 (purple).
- Generic gear from all Tiers and rarities has the same maximum level, currently 440. This is in contrast with attuned gear, which has a maximum level and a minimum level primarily determined by Tier of the content, with minor variation depending on rarity (green < blue < purple); only the most recent episodes have attuned gear with a higher maximum level than 440.
- Generic gear is dropped directly via Loot Picker, that is, not through boxes. Usually there will be one piece for the damage role and one for the support role to choose from, but with different styles. The only exception is weapons, which are still dropped as a box allowing you to choose Weapon Type and role.
- These appear to be the availability of generic and attuned gear:
- Only attuned gear boxes drop (usually 1 choice out of 2 per boss):; Regular content (both open-world missions and instances) from the 3 latest episodes (excluding event), as of the release of The Sins of Black Adam.; Some Age of Justice open world missions' rewards (it is unknown why this is the case as this does not apply to other episodes in the same tier, which either drop neither, or only drop generic gear).
- Both attuned and generic gear drop (usually 1 choice out of 2 for each per boss):; Most On Duty instances from Amazon Fury Part III to Birds of Prey ( Episodes 27 to 37).; The Death of Superman is a special Episode that does not have an episode number, but was released during this range and drops both. It only has 1 option for attuned gear as opposed to the usual 2.
- Only generic gear drops (usually 1 choice out of 2 per boss):; Most On Duty instances prior to Amazon Fury Part III.; Some episode open-world missions, as early as Take Pride from Sons of Trigon. In earlier episodes usually dropped as "Reward Box" or "Gear Cache". In the rest of the episodes, missions give Loot Crate with generic gear more often and consistently.; Any Tier 6 content from before the 3 latest episodes.; Event version of the latest episode content.; Sub-Avatars are bosses in regular Gotham that drops 1 piece of generic gear and 1 piece of fixed-level gear.

Trivia
- One flaw of Attuned Gear so far is, that it does not tell in advance which CR a player character needs to be to get its maximum item level. It needs to be used to find out.
- Since game update 115 all vendors can repair gear. Originally that had been only possible at specific repair vendors, most prominently Skeets Repairs.
- Since game update 139 gear cannot be damaged in combat anymore and thus the repair functionality of vendors was removed.
