Overview
- For the base game story arcs with the same name, see Story Arcs (Classic Game). Story Arcs
- Story Arcs is the term for additional story-based playable content that advances the storyline beyond the base Classic Game. Story Arcs includes both Chapters and Episodes, both of which are free DLC. Story Arcs can also refer to groups of Episodes or Chapters within the larger continuity that have a more consecutive plotline.
- Chronologically, Story Arcs content has increasing requirements for combat rating of the player character. They are grouped and arranged by Tier.
- From Episode 30: Earth 3 onwards, all players with a minimum level (typically Level 20) can access an easier version of Instance content via Casual difficulty mode. While within, their CR is boosted to the minimum needed.
- Since Episode 41: House of Legends, all episode content no longer has a CR cap limiting rewards of Source Marks.
- All Story Arcs content is also free-to-play.
- Story Arcs expand the story of the base Classic Game, but do not affect the Classic Game―which takes place before all Episodes and Chapters. Episodes, and later Chapters, themselves form a continuity according to their chronological order of release.

- Circe and Brother Blood were successful in releasing Trigon from his dimension, but the Sentinels of Magic trapped Trigon between his world and ours, resulting in the in-between dimension, Gotham Wastelands. With Trigon at his most vulnerable, his sons came forth to vie for his power. The Sons of Trigon sought the family reunion from Hell, and to be joined with Pride― Raven―and their father to gain ultimate power. The sons sent demons to the mortal plane to abduct innocent souls in order to torture and extract enough sin needed to awaken Trigon from his forced slumber. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman and the Titans tried to keep Raven from temptation, and to stop the children of sin from releasing their father and endanger the entire universe. Brother Blood's schemes for ultimate power reached a new level as he used Raven and the Sons of Trigon to collect even more power. Raven sensed a disturbance in the levels of sinful energy in the Gotham Wastelands' Desecrated Cathedral. Players joined Raven as she confronted Trigon to stop him from once again gaining enough power to destroy the mortal world. In the aftermath, her panicked brothers scrambled for power and turned on each other. Jesse (Envy) caused Julius (Gluttony) to envy their brother Jacob (Lust) resulting in the hungriest brother becoming insatiable in his desires for food AND power. The Gotham Wastelands continued to be full of mayhem and madness. Imps and demons run amuck in the fiery wasteland, allowing Jacob and Jack (Sloth) to seductively and slowly (respectively) make their moves. Raven, annoyed as ever by her brothers, once again asked for the player's help putting them back in their places.

- Darkseid sent his agents below the surfaces of New Genesis and Apokolips to gather relics so that he could harness the power of the Old Gods by recovering ancient Third World artifacts. At the same time, a skirmish broke out on the surface of New Genesis as Darkseid's forces attempted to attack Celestial City. Granny Goodness also was testing the mettle of Earth's heroes and villains in an attempt to recruit and prepare the denizens of Apokolips to serve Darkseid. For a while, it seemed that Earth was safe from Darkseid's meddling, until war between the New Gods once again heated up on New Genesis, and players reported to the battle site to help defend the area from Darkseid's invasion force. Though the players triumphed over Steppenwolf, he left with an eerie message: "The Source will speak to Darkseid." Darkseid finally gathered enough Artifacts of the Old Gods to reshape them into a machine that would allow him to access the all-powerful Source―which would mean his will could never be defeated. Stop him!

- The League of Assassins continues to attempt to exert their control over the DC Universe. Players traveled through a rift in time and space to the world of the DC Bombshells to battle the "Bombshell" Talia al Ghul. In her attempts to alter their timeline and change the outcome of World War II, the Lady al Ghul created a tear in reality itself! Next, the League broke into the Flash Museum in Central City, in what looked to be an attempt to steal an artifact from an alternate reality― Talia Al Ghul's scimitar! Players navigated through the museum to keep the artifact out of the League of Assassins' hands, and discover what they are plotting next. When heroes and villains arrived at the Lazarus Pools, they found the unconscious hanging bodies of their allies from the Justice League and the Society. Having been submerged into the Pools, heroes and villains had to fight against their allies in an attempt to reverse the effects of the serums. Finally, we discover that Ra's al Ghul's madness is greater than it has ever been. But rather than an all-out assault on any one of the world's 'great' cities, he has captured Star City's hero, Green Arrow, and Central City's nefarious rogue, Captain Cold, to recruit them to his cause. Players fought alongside Black Canary or Heat Wave against The Demon's forces in the infamous mountain fortress of Nanda Parbat.

- After a bit of trouble in the Fortress of Solitude, Lois Lane investigates The Science Spire and realized the Kryptonian sightings there were connected to General Zod seeking information from Lex Luthor's database concerning the location of the Bottle City of Kandor. The location of Kandor aboard Brainiac's Bottle Ship became known by Zod, and he took possession of the Bottled City following the ensuing battle on board. Although still trapped within Brainiac’s bottle, Zod situated Kandor near the Fortress of Solitude and returned the city to normal size. Zod sought to sway the citizens of Kandor to his cause and raise an army of Kryptonians to rule the planet. - Jack Kirby as the manifestation of The Source - Green Lantern #12, 2022
- Arguably, the biggest Saga in DC Universe Online history! The race for Metal began with Batman disappearing as Dark Multiverse energy infected people in Gotham City, turning them into threats. The Batman Who Laughs cracked open Arkham Asylum, sending escaped inmates to run amok. Twisted alternate versions of Batman known as The Dark Knights and the Justice League scoured the universe for rare forms of Metal―the keys to victory in the war between the Multiverse and the Darkness. As heroes and villains alike teamed up across Earth, Oa, Themyscira, Olympus, and even inside The Batcave, the Bruce Waynes of the Dark Multiverse hatched plans of their own.
- As Earth sank into the Dark Multiverse, Thanagar aimed a world-destroying gun at Earth to prevent other worlds from following suit. With Batman recovered, players teamed-up to journey through Batman's nightmares, Atlantis' Silent School, and Oa's Sciencells, battling the Dark Knights before diving headlong into the Forge of Worlds at the heart of the Dark Multiverse. To save reality from crumbling, players needed to first defeat Dawnbreaker, The Drowned, and the Bat God Barbatos, leader of the Dark Knights! But at what cost... The Source Wall was cracked releasing the Source energy into the universe.
- Metropolis descended into a battle royale after Lex Luthor broadcasts to the world that he's leaving his wealth, technology, and weapons to anyone willing to take them. Crime was rampant and the Birds of Prey are on the case! Lex was revealed to have harnessed Apokoliptian technology back in Darkseid's War Factory to gain the power of Source energy, which he used to become Alpha Lex Luthor, a nod to his half-Martian form, Apex Lex, in DC's Year of the Villain event. In the comic book event, Lex blew himself up in his tower to prove his devotion to Perpetua so be could help her ascend to power. This is similar to how, in the game, the Birds of Prey episode indirectly leads to Perpetua's rise in Legion of Doom.
- The Multiverse started collapsing due to the rupturing of The Source Wall, and the damage spread to the Sphere of the Gods. Universes collided with each other, and All gods―Greek, Old, and even New―threw the dimensionally-patchwork-merged Themyscira into complete war and chaos as they tried to recover and steal Source Wall fragments for their own power. The Wonder Woman of our universe joined forces with Wonder Women from four different universes, forming the Council of Wonder Women to rise up against the gods. With the player's help, their efforts to find the fragments to repair The Source Wall were hoped to be enough to save the multiverse as a whole. But another power lurked in the background with even more sinister plans...
- Next, The Monitor summoned all heroes and villains to his House of Legends to train, coordinate, and prepare for a looming multiversal threat.
- Perpetua, the nigh-omnipotent cosmic master, arrived and unleashed chaos, destruction, and Doom so that she could rise to power and rewrite the Multiverse in her doomed image! Alpha Lex Luthor asked villains to serve her via his new Legion of Doom. Heroes joined Martian Manhunter in forming a cosmic team powerful enough to oppose her. Mister Mxyzptlk agreed to help, but something about it felt off. Still, he opened the way to the Sixth Dimension where the World Forger could be found. The best chance to defeat Perpetua and her Doom was to unite her sons against her. If her son, World Forger, could be convinced to join the cause, and if the Monitor could recruit the Anti-Monitor... there might be a chance.
- Finally, Perpetua's plans to undo, remake, and destroy the Multiverse were nearly complete. The Hall of Justice and most of Washington D.C. were in ruins. The world's heroes and villains must cut off Perpetua's power and stop her once and for all, but time was running out. Grail agreed to help Wonder Woman weaken Perpetua's power on New Apokolips: ending Darkfather's cruel reign. Lex Luthor and Death Metal Batman led the charge against a major source of Perpetua’s power: her throne on Earth 3; but first forces needed to take on the Crime Syndicate. It was time to take the fight to Perpetua! Players met Wonder Woman at The Source Wall ready to fight to preserve the Multiverse.

- The Light and Rain Story Arc focuses on sisters Esperanza and Luzia Cavalera and how events in their lives both in Kaznia and on Mogo escalate and have wide-ranging results across the universe. In Kaznia City, a string of mysterious murders targeting exobyte-powered individuals seemed to be similar to cases in Gotham City and sent shockwaves through the streets. Players teamed up with occult detective John Constantine, new local hero Voivode, and Esperanza to uncover a web of supernatural secrets and discoveries concerning the mysterious The Reckoning. Next, fallen hero turned Indigo Lantern Luzia recruited the player to aid with an invasion occurring on the sentient planet Mogo. Many Lanterns assembled there to help, including her sister, Esperanza – who then went missing. Luzia uncovered an alarming plan led by Amon Sur of the Yellow Lanterns; a plan that threatened the very fate of Mogo itself. Her attempt to save her sister and stop the impending doom while still coping with the fallout from her past mistakes, led to a shocking fate and saw both sisters pay a tremendous price.
- Following Lyssa Drak's deeds, and overcome with despair, Luzia transformed into a Gray Lantern. The powerful sorrow energy radiating from her was enough for Mogo to become similarly changed into a mournful world shrouded in grief. Using Luzia's pain together with Mogo's corrupted Power Core as a catalyst to spread sorrow energy that drains and weakens other Lanterns, Lyssa unleashed Nekron and the Black Lanterns as key leaders of the Lantern Corps were taken hostage one-by-one. With sorrow spreading unchecked to serve a darker purpose, the player fought alongside Kyle Rayner to save as many as possible and challenge the embodiment of death itself before it was too late. The Gray power of Sorrow continued to overtake Mogo, and cast a shadow that even the brightest rings struggled to cut through. Mogo, once mournful, stood on the brink of becoming something far worse: frozen, shattered, lost forever, and a potential threat to spread sorrow throughout the universe. Luzia’s despair also reached a critical point, and unless she was reached in time, the living planet would not survive. Guy Gardner issued a call for help―because this time, the Lanterns alone may not be enough. However, the Player soon discovered that things didn't add up. Refugees were being gathered under Red Lantern supervision. Families were being separated, and children were disappearing without explanation. Beneath the Red Lanterns' fury, something else was unfolding. They're not just out of control...they're concealing something. Players stood with the Lantern Corps as hope and will clashed against rage and despair before ascending into the heart of Luzia’s despair to confront sorrow head-on and prove that hope still burns bright.

- Additional content to the game was originally labeled DLC packs and could contain new powers, upgrades and Legends characters besides new playable content. On March 31st, 2015, Episode playable content was separated from powers, upgrades and Legends characters that were previously included in similarly named DLC packs. DLC packs or episode content were included in an active membership or could be bought as single items in the marketplace, until June 2021 when all episodes became free to play.
- Game Update 151 changed "Event" difficulty to "Story Mode" difficulty (level 20+). All episode content that previously had an Event version (episodes starting from Earth 3) now had a Story difficulty version. Open world parts of all episodes are now available from level 20+.; The Day of Reckoning update renamed "Story" difficulty mode to "Casual".
- Halls of Power Part II was the last quarterly episode, until Amazon Fury Part III, starting a new cycle of large episodes.
- Episodes 15 - 26 were released on a monthly basis containing: one piece of content for large groups (raid, operation, or alert) with the other piece of content for small groups (solo, challenge, or duo).
- Previously, there were periods called Open Episodes during which most or all episodes were free to play with some limitations. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, episodes went free-to-play. On June 15th, 2021, this became permanent and Episodes were removed from the marketplace.; Free players can purchase fixed-level Iconic Battle Suits (e.g. War-Metal) from respective vendors, or episode iconic styles from Vending Unit 00 (e.g. Shepherd of Adara) with Source Marks.; They could also receive Catalyst (Augments) drops, obtain Adaptive Augments and level them up, unlike in the event version.
- While The Death of Superman does not contain or increase the episode number, its feats are located in the "Story Arcs" category, meaning the game does classify it as one.
- Many On Duty instances (especially from earlier releases) are named directly after the location used in the instance. This has led to the location and the On Duty instances often being confused or referred to interchangeably, even though as the game expanded, many instances now have multiple locations and often reuse old locations.
